Did you know that someone is diagnosed with leprosy every two minutes?
That’s more than 200,000 new cases a year. Although it is curable, millions of people worldwide are living with the effects of the disease, from physical disability to mental health problems, poverty and discrimination.
Leprosy if untreated, can lead to disabilities, but it is easily curable. In fact, it cost just £24 to cure Nagajothi pictured below.
Nagajothi suffered with people looking down on her and this affected her mental health. But then The Leprosy Mission stepped in, offering her a place at the Vocational Training Centre (VTC) in Vadathorasalur. She took the brave decision to go and live there, away from her friends and family. She chose to become an electrician and this experience has transformed her life!
To help raise funds for people affected by leprosy, like Nagajothi, Guy Willcock and some of the other members of the Birmingham Central group walked around the inner Peninsula of Rutland Water on May the 4th.
Along with other supporters of this great mission they helped to raise over £1,200 from the walk ( more sponsorship monies are still to come in) for the work of the Leprosy Mission.
