Lee Gough, a prominent figure at Megan Baker House, was recently honoured with an award by the esteemed High Sheriff of Worcestershire, marking a significant acknowledgment of her outstanding contributions.

Attending an evening event hosted by the High Sheriff, Lee had no inkling that the evening would culminate in a recognition of her dedicated service. The event celebrated numerous individuals and groups, all of whom tirelessly provide crucial support to the community, often on a voluntary basis. Lee recounts the surreal moment when the citation for her award was read, and her name illuminated the screen.

Having led the charity for an impressive decade, Lee transitioned from the role of CEO earlier this year, assuming the position of Development Director. Throughout her 15-year involvement with the charity, it has navigated various challenges, steadfastly upholding its commitment to delivering invaluable services to numerous families.

The charity specialises in aiding children with cerebral palsy and other motor-related disabilities, such as dyspraxia. Weekly sessions empower these children to overcome obstacles, fostering skills like feeding and dressing themselves. Many even learn to walk, either with support or independently. Wheelchair-bound individuals acquire transfer skills, gaining the confidence to move to a seat or take a few steps.

Beyond assisting children, the charity extends its support to adults grappling with conditions like Parkinson’s disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and acquired brain injuries. The programs enable them to overcome challenges and maintain as much independence as possible. With a dedicated team of nine highly qualified staff, the charity operates on a self-funding model, relying on grants from major trusts, fundraising activities, and support from businesses, whom they encourage to adopt the charity as their cause of the year. The annual financial requirement stands at £400,000, with every penny raised being channeled directly into service delivery.

Megan Baker House stands as a testament to resilience, commitment, and the positive impact that dedicated individuals and organisations can have on their communities.
