At The Chamwell Centre in Longlevens, Gloucester, we believe every young person deserves the chance to shine. Our Inclusive Work Experience programme, run in partnership with our neighbours at The Milestone Special Needs School, gives students with additional needs the opportunity to build practical skills, confidence, and friendships in a welcoming real-world setting.
Throughout the last school year five enthusiastic Milestone students joined our busy community café team. From serving customers and preparing food to keeping the café sparkling, they tackled each task with energy and pride. Their smiles said it all — and their dedication quickly became a highlight of every day for staff and visitors alike. Parents and carers often commented on the new independence they saw at home, while the students themselves loved learning new skills and meeting a wide range of people.
The impact speaks for itself. All five students are now progressing to college this autumn, and two impressed us so much that we offered them part-time café contracts so they can continue working with us alongside their studies. Seeing them flourish as valued team members is proof that inclusive opportunities can open real career pathways.
The Chamwell Centre exists to support children and adults with disabilities, additional needs, and mobility challenges, so this programme is a natural extension of our mission. By providing a safe, supportive environment, we help young people develop work habits, social confidence, and a sense of achievement that will stay with them far beyond their placement.
This September we are delighted to welcome a new cohort, including Emily, who is already bringing her own sparkle to the café. Together these young people demonstrate what true inclusion looks like in action: teamwork, friendship, and meaningful work that benefits both the individual and the wider community.
And if you’re wondering about our playful motto — “Feathers Up!” — it comes from our beloved duck mascot, Chuck the Chamwell Duck, who inspires us all to waddle forward with confidence and joy.
