There are times when everyone feels like they’re the centre of the world; everything depends on them, nothing can happen unless they arrange it, no one else can make those important decisions… The weight of the world is upon their shoulders and as a result they feel like their heads are in a spin.
I recently discovered a wonderful way to get my head out of the clouds and feel more grounded, and it happened unexpectedly.
My daughter’s friend invited her along to a skydive experience to celebrate her 18th birthday and as a last hurrah before disappearing off to university. As it happened, there was room on the plane which was offered to me, and I jumped at the chance (pardon the pun)!
There is nothing quite like seeing the earth beneath you as you float through the clouds to bring everything else into perspective. Initially it’s the adrenaline that gets you out of the door and into the air, and then you experience complete submission. I gave myself over to someone else, who had my life in his hands. I was forced to trust in him to take care of everything while all I had to do was look around and enjoy the view. And then came the dopamine… Funny how wanting feel grounded took leaving the ground altogether but hurtling towards it really helped!
If you can’t jump out of an aeroplane, try some deep breathing exercises every day to slow your world down, submit to the fact that shit happens, and then look to those you trust to take the reins for a while.
