From Language Centre to Business Centre
How a small business re-invented itself post-Covid

Kingsway English Centre rolled seamlessly into its 32nd year in 2020 with nothing to indicate that this was going to be a dramatic year. As a well-established English language training centre with an international reputation, Kingsway had decades of experience helping foreign professionals to improve their English for business. We were running our intensive courses in our lovely Georgian building on Foregate Street in Worcester. We were taking bookings for the rest of the year & business was buoyant.

Then Covid crashed into all our lives; like all businesses, we closed our doors and entered lockdown. Potential clients panicked and bookings dried up immediately as the pandemic swept across the globe. As the severity of the crisis grew, existing clients cancelled their courses and asked for refunds. The situation was beyond bleak.

My husband Rick and I had started Kingsway in 1988 so had experienced many an international crisis from Gulf Wars to 9/11, from the erupting Icelandic volcano to the financial crisis. We had survived them all but this was different. Was Covid going to be our final crisis?

Apparently the word for “crisis” in Chinese is created from 2 symbols: danger + opportunity. Covid had forced us into a dangerous situation so we had to find the opportunity.

Fortunately it was staring us in the face: our lovely Georgian building. Our 12 classrooms would make excellent meeting rooms and serviced offices & our student lounge would make a perfect area for networking. We had decades of experience providing a first-class service for professional people, so we just had to slant everything to a local rather than an international clientele.

And so, out of adversity, Kingsway House was born – a friendly and professional business centre in Worcester offering meeting rooms, serviced offices and coworking space. For people who want to drop the overheads of a permanent office but need to access professional facilities on an occasional or regular basis, Kingsway House is the perfect solution.

We know the challenges of running a small business so make it as easy & cost-effective as possible to use us. Our very flexible & generous agreements allow our clients to expand, contract or cancel the space they need.

Covid forced us to re-think our lives but, surprisingly, it has also refreshed and invigorated us. We’re rather enjoying this new direction of travel and won’t be turning back.
