Hooray for running for charity

The Cheltenham Running Festival is not something I ever thought I’d go along to as a spectator, let alone participating as a runner. However, when Julie Kent challenged Hooray to raise £3,500 to celebrate the 30th birthday of the Pied Piper Appeal, how could I say no?

I have never been a sporty person! I was frequently the last person picked in PE and the only running I’d done before 2020 was running for the bus for college, which was often a failure followed by a desperate call to my mum for a lift.

As I got older and realised that my 18-year-old metabolism was trying to break up with me, I admitted defeat and joined a gym. I did a variety of classes like Clubbercise, Body Pump, Pilates and more and actually enjoyed them! As well as this, I had a weightlifting program that my gym instructor had given me – and my relationship with exercise shifted into a more positive one. However, lockdown hit me like a tonne of bricks when I realized I wasn’t going to be able to go to the gym for a while. What was I going to do?!

My friend introduced me to the Couch to 5K app and I began running 5Ks about 3 times a week in about 8 weeks from starting! The Hooray gang signed up for the 10K in January, which gave us a good 6 months to practice. But as I love self-punishment, I decided to do the bare minimum training and just hope for the best on the day… Whoops!

On what felt like the hottest day of the year, we took to the track and I completed the 10K in an amazing 1hr 31mins!!!!! I say amazing because I’m in genuine amazed that I didn’t die during the process. I came 257th out of 266th, so I guess you could say that slow and steady does NOT win the race, BUT it’s the taking part (and raising money!) that counts.

We managed to raise a whopping £440 for the Pied Piper Appeal and all lived to tell the tale! We’re now 72% of the way towards our £3,500 goal! Well done to Francesca, Tom, Dan, Ian, and Dom for all doing so well! Our next challenge? A Hooray HQ bake off… Follow Hooray Recruitment on our social media pages to see how we get on!
