Running a business today is not just about growth – it is also about making sure you are protected as you grow. Employment law is moving quickly, and for many SME owners the challenge is simply keeping up. The good news is that, with the right support, these changes can be managed in a straightforward and practical way.
Our role is to help you stay on top of what matters, without it becoming overwhelming, and to turn legal changes into clear actions that work for your business.
Employment law is not just something to tick off a list. When it is handled well, it has a real impact on how your team performs day to day. Clear structure, consistency and good management practices all contribute to better outcomes. In simple terms, getting your HR right helps your business run more smoothly.
Here are some of the key changes we are currently supporting clients with:
- Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) reform – effective 6 April 2026
SSP will now be payable from day one of absence. This means a bit more cost and administration from the outset, but with the right processes and manager guidance in place, it can be handled consistently and with minimal disruption. - Flexible working reforms – effective from April 2024 (continuing into 2025–2026)
Employees now have the right to request flexible working from day one. Having a clear and fair approach in place will help you manage requests confidently and make decisions that work for both the business and your team. - New duty to prevent sexual harassment – effective October 2024
There is now a stronger expectation on employers to take proactive steps. In practice, this means making sure your policies, training and day-to-day behaviours all support a respectful and safe working environment. - Greater focus on fairness, wellbeing and consistency – ongoing (2024–2026)
There is increasing scrutiny on how decisions are made and applied. Consistency and good documentation are becoming more important than ever in reducing risk and supporting fair outcomes.
For SMEs, this is not just about avoiding issues. These changes also shape how your business is seen by both current employees and potential hires. Getting the basics right builds trust, strengthens your culture, and helps you attract and retain the right people.
The key thing we always say to clients is this: it is not just about having policies in place, it is about how they are used day to day. That is where we tend to focus – helping you put simple, practical processes in place that your managers can actually follow.
When employment law is aligned with how your business operates, it becomes much easier to manage. It brings clarity, reduces risk, and supports better performance across your team.
Ultimately, good HR is about having someone alongside you who can help spot risks early, guide decisions, and make sure people issues are handled properly and commercially.
If any of these changes feel unclear, or you have not reviewed your contracts or handbook recently, we are currently offering a free contract and handbook audit (usually £295).
